About this Project
Project Description and Size: Granite Construction, along with a partner who owns the land, has proposed a 20-acre aggregate production facility – gravel quarry - to be located in Parleys Canyon (a historical mining canyon), above Interstate 80, the six-lane interstate freeway that runs through the canyon.
Permits:
Granite Construction has obtained a "small mine" permit from the Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining (DOGM), which oversees mining permit approvals in the state of Utah, ensuring that mines comply with already-approved regulations to protect the public.
Additionally, Granite has received approval on its air quality application from the Department of Air Quality (DAQ). They, along with the EPA, are tasked with developing requirements to protect our air and environment. As their results show, Granite Construction is being held to the highest standards.
UDAQ new minor source permitting requirements have been met; therefore, the application has proceeded to the public comment period.
We are only using Tier 4 engines on site which is the best in the industry
Modeling results for criterial air pollutants are significantly below the established NAAQS minor source thresholds. For example, the facility is projected to not exceed 3.6% and 11% of the PM2.5 and PM10minor source thresholds, respectively.
Addressing Major Needs & Protecting the Environment:
Because there is a major need for aggregate materials in Utah (Salt Lake County currently does not meet its demand through local aggregate production sources), not permitting a mine close to the source of major projects in the Wasatch Front means that we’ll need to continue importing aggregate materials by bringing in heavy vehicles from further distances. This is worse for our air and will decrease the life of existing infrastructure.
